1968-1973

Below is a table with hourly pay rate for underground mine employees from 1968 through 1973. Miners, diamond drillers and motor crews have additional salary through bonuses, this is not listed here. The bonuses were paid on work done above and beyond a set amount of work that was expected. This set amount of work was referred to as “The Standard”. Bonuses made up a substantial amount of an employee’s wages. All shifts underground were 8 hour shifts from collar to collar (from the surface entrance of mine back to the surface entrance of mine).
Note: June 1, 1903 the 8-hour-workday law went into effect for underground employees, this lasted until 2012 when 12 hour days became
permitted by law.
