Red Jacket & Bisbee Development Company

Red Jacket/Contact Shaft

Red Jacket & Bisbee Development Company was incorporated on May 18, 1903. The three compartment Red Jacket shaft was started using a horse whim as a hoisted. In charge of the whim was Henry Tarr. He was renowned as one half of the champion double jack hand driller, the Tarr brothers. The shaft was 150 feet deep by December 1903, but little work was done after that. By 1906 the mine had shut down. Sometime, later the mine was reopened as the Contact shaft. Again the work on the property was short lived. In the 1990s the mine remained as an open, untimbered hole. The dumps were rather colorful with abundant rocks covered in thin layers of copper minerals
