Cole Interior Shaft

This was an interior shaft that extended from the 500 level to the 800 level of the Cole mine. It was driven in 1940 with the 500 level station cut and timbered the following year. The hoist was located on the 500 level and was automatic and did not use a hoistman. If a man was riding on the cage all they need to do was move a lever to indicate which level they wanted to travel. If materials such as mine cars or timber were being moved there were levers on the stations that controlled the cage movement. (note, it was strictly forbidden for a man to ride on a cage with anything other than men) This shaft worked until the shutdown in 1975. The Cole Interior shaft is considered part of the Cole Mine.
