Charon  shaft ( Van Horn shaft )

Charon shaft or Van Horn shaft Bisbee AZ

The Charon Shaft, the nearby Holbrook # 2 shaft has had its headframe removed and is covered by a small building circa 1927

Charon Shaft or Van Horn Shaft was located to the west and slightly above the Holbrook #2 shaft. The small wooden headframe is often seen in photographs of the Holbrook mine area. Due to its location, it can be confused for the Holbrook # 2 shaft, particularly since the Charon maintained a headframe long after the Holbrook headframes had been torn down. It accessed the older Holbrook mine workings on “B” level and was used by lessees as early as 1914 and continued to be used, at least into the 1930’s. This shaft was mined out by the Holbrook Extension of the Lavender Pit.
